What we are going to suggest is not impossible to follow complicated DIY procedures. We know you don’t have the time or energy for those. We want to talk about easy to do stuff which can be bought off the shelf, installed with the basic tools available in any home and is also kind on the pocket.

Style up a Shelf

A strategically placed shelf in the living space, study or bedroom can act as a highlighter or add to the story of the room.

The first thing to decide if planning to install a new shelf is its location in the room. Opposite the bed in the bedroom or center of the highlight wall in the living area or above your desk in the study are some of the ideal locations. The criteria should be visibility while selecting the location of the shelf. It should be in a place where the eye goes frequently while you are in the room.

Once the location is final you can decide on the size and number of shelves that you want to have. This will depend on the wall area available as well as the items that you want to display.

If going for more than one shelf, try to have them scattered across the wall rather than having all the shelfs in one row. If it is a bookshelf that you are planning you can plan a v-shaped shelf too, to make the book display attractive.

If you already have a shelf that you want to refurbish, you can start with the color of the shelf.  There can be two ways in which you can use color. Either use a shade that blends with the overall color scheme of the area and then use funky and attractive objects to make the entire thing eye catching. But if the items that you want to display are in neutral shades like crystal showpieces or metal artifacts then you can choose to color the shelf in an eye-popping candy or fluorescent color which will immediately draw attention to itself. Glass shelves are also a good option to keep the shelf in a neutral zone and keep changing the display from time to time. The advantage of the glass shelf is that it can be removed and fixed on another wall. Also, if later on you plan to change the color of the walls, you will not have to worry about matching the shelves.

The next thing to do is selecting the objects that can be displayed on the shelf. While displaying books you can use interesting bookends that will act as artifacts and break the monotony. While displaying frames, showpieces and other items layer the stuff that you want to display on a single shelf. Flat and larger items like frames, plaques and pictures can go at the back and the small artifacts can be displayed in a scattered form in front of them. This will add depth to the shelf and also make it look interesting.

Voila so we just showed you some easy ways to refresh a dull room and add some interesting elements without spending too much of your hard-earned money.

Style a dining table ready for entertaining

We spend a large chunk of money from our interior budget to style our living area. We use the most expensive items to enhance it and add the elegance quotient. But many times we forget to give the same kind of attention to our dining area. When it comes to our dining table we tend to steer towards safe and practical styles which are easy to use and maintain. We forget that the dining area and dinner table is as important as the living space. When we entertain people, they don’t just spend time in the living room, they also spend a considerable amount of time in the dining room.

Let us look at a few ideas that can make your dinner table an absolute hit amongst your guests and also be a place where you look forward to having your daily meals.

A simple wooden or glass table top is generally the most cost effective and practical to have. But avoid buying the entire set of table and chair. What you can do is pick up a table that suits your needs. While selecting, keep a look out for tables with interesting base details. These details will be visible if you are having a glass top. Many glass tables also come with an under table shelf that can be used to display interesting related artifacts.

If selecting a wooden top, you can scout for tables with carving details in the corners or a center belt in a different veneer. This too makes the table look stylish.

While selecting the chairs, try and find something that compliments the table but is not an exact match. You can dabble with some color by selecting chairs with upholstery or even pick up a combination of two to three different types of chairs that work well together. This will make the entire set look very unique. Another option for having a different style of seating is to opt for a few chairs, and have a bench on any one side of the table. This bench can be upholstered in velvet to give a pop-up effect to the whole dining area.

But what if you already have an existing dining set that you are not too happy with but do not want to discard just yet. We have a few suggestions with which you can convert your boring dinner table into an object de art.

The first thing to do is to get a simple and elegant table cover. We would suggest investing in a few solid colors. They could be the colors of the room or shades of the same color. Try and avoid prints or checks. The advantage for going with plain colors is that you can play as much as you want with the runner and placemats. You can even have two to three different types of runner and placemats sets. One can be for daily use while others can be used when entertaining. This will give you the freedom to experiment with prints, textures and colors.

When you have guests over make sure to have a centerpiece for the table. It could be a simple vase with fresh flowers, an elegant showpiece, a fancy candle stand or even a crystal bowl. Just by adding a runner and placing a centerpiece will change the entire look of the dining area and create a welcoming atmosphere for the guests.

Throw in the best dinnerware you have and nicely folded napkins and you are ready to have a rocking party.

Entertaining in the outdoors.

As much as we like entertaining guests in a formal setting no one can deny the charm of having an outdoor barbeque and sharing food and laughter in a relaxed manner. Sitting outdoors with friends or family, enjoying the fresh breeze, and the aroma of the sizzling barbeque grill. Sounds like the perfect way to spend the weekend. But entertaining outside is not about just putting out a few chairs and passing out the food. With a little effort you can turn your backyard or terrace into a place where you can entertain in style with as much comfort as inside.

It is always better to take care of the basics before we move on to the fancy stuff. Make sure that you have a dedicated area for the grill to go. First decide the placement of the grill before you do any other planning. Once the location of the grill is final then you can plan your seating and other decorative elements.

Our first advice would be to Invest in good outdoor chairs. This is nonnegotiable. Comfortable seating is a must when it comes to spending time out in the open. If people are not comfortable outside, sooner or later some of your guests will move inside with their plates and that will be the end of your perfectly planned evening. The seating arrangement can also be a decorative feature and enhance the look of your patio. Choose an assortment of chairs which complement each other and are easy to maintain. You can choose colorful chairs to add a little zing to the décor. You can also throw in a couple of benches with the chairs to break the monotony. Benches are favorite with kids and adults both and are again low on maintenance.

Another good option to spruce up the backyard is to put in a few garden ornaments. They will add a touch of funkiness to the otherwise dull décor. In case of a backyard you can also paint your fence in a bright color to liven up the area. Hanging planters in colorful pots is a great enhancer for terraces. You can also play with paver titles in different hues or create a pattern and enhance the floor area.

Another easy way to change the look of your backyard is to add some inexpensive lighting to the mix. Adding a spotlight to highlight your garden decorations or adding a touch of glamour to the steps by adding step lights are wonderful ways to uplift the entire aura of the outdoor space. String lights which are also called fairy lights as they create a fairy tale kind of dreamy atmosphere can be hung in the patio or over the fencing. The soft glowing lights are pleasing to the eye and perfect for a mood lighting. There are also many varieties of garden lights available in stores. You can select a few within your budget. Garden lights can be installed randomly around the available space or be used to illuminate a certain sitting area or pathway in the garden.

Once all this is in place you are good to go. Plan the next dinner with friends and entertain in style.
